Our book project combines academic inquiry, journalistic reportage and comic book storytelling. We will be working through the medium of comics journalism, a non-fiction genre associated in particular with Joe Sacco (above: Palestine, 1996). Sarah Glidden has compiled a wonderful index of graphic non-fiction works that are available to read in full online.
The medium raises interesting ethical issues: what artistic liberties can we take before it the work ceases to have the authenticity expected of journalism? Here are some illuminating viewpoints from Blake Nelson, Drawn Truth, and Alastair Reid. Nick Sousanis has compiled more resources here.
